Manchester United have confirmed that defender Rhys Bennett has temporarily left the club and will spend the 2024/25 season on loan at Fleetwood Town.

A few days ago, The Peoples Person covered a report which stated that Bennett was on the verge of joining Fleetwood and now the transfer has got over the line.

It was stated that the player was eager for first-team opportunities in his development, having somewhat outgrown youth team football.

Bennett captained United to FA Youth Cup glory two years ago, where he scored in the final against Nottingham Forest. Alejandro Garnacho scored a brace on the same occasion.

The defender put pen to paper on a professional contract with United a year ago and was named on the bench by Erik ten Hag in the Premier League away defeat to West Ham last December. He has been on the bench four times for the Red Devils’ senior side.

Bennett proceeded to join Stockport County on loan in January but his time there was underwhelming, to say the least. He made one appearance for the club as they secured promotion from League Two.

The 20-year-old was included in United’s first-team squad that made their way to the United States for pre-season.

He made substitute appearances against Arsenal in Los Angeles and Liverpool in South Carolina.

The Carrington academy graduate could make his debut for Fleetwood on Saturday when they meet AFC Wimbledon.

Fleetwood are also set to come up against Stoke City in the third round of the Carabao Cup next month.

The Cod Army have confirmed that Bennett will wear the number 15 shirt for the 2024/25 campaign.

Fleetwood are currently in 11th place in League Two with one win and two draws so far this term.
