Olympique Lyonnais have confirmed the signing of Malick Fofana (18) from Gent on a four-and-a-half year contract.
Considered a highly talented prospect for the Belgian national side, Fofana made his professional debut in 2022 for Gent. The young player has since been courted by several teams across Europe but was convinced to join the project building in France.
Gent will receive an initial €17 million for the player who graduated from their youth academy, but this figure could later rise €22 million if certain bonuses are met. The Belgian club will also maintain 20% of the profit brought about by any future transfer that the French side might make.
Fofana featured in 64 appearances with the club, in which he scored 5 goals and recorded 10 assists. The versatile attacker will hope to provide some extra threat to a Lyon offence that’s struggled to find the net this season. Les Gones have scored only 16 goals in Ligue 1 at the midpoint of the competition.
After the double transfer of Adryelson (25) and Lucas Perri (26), the young Belgian winger becomes the third player brought in this window by Lyon as they look to carry on their efforts to revitalise their squad.
Lyon will continue their efforts to sign another attacker before the end of the window, with the club heavily linked to the West Ham’s Saïd Benrahma (28).
