Valenciennes FC have confirmed the signing of Siriné Doucouré (21) from FC Lorient on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The forward who is currently representing Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations will join up with his new squad when he returns from the tournament.

Doucouré has featured sporadically for Lorient as they have attempted to gather some form in a tough season that sees them bottom of the table and desperately trying to find the points to escape relegation.

A temporary move to VAFC will likely see the Mali international provided with more frequent game time and Lorient will hope that his development will progress with a stay in Ligue 2.

From a bad situation with Lorient to something worse

However, it’s a move that feels somewhat like Doucouré is jumping out of the fire and into the frying pan as he swaps the bottom of Ligue 1 for the bottom of Ligue 2. And while Lorient have a slim hope of surviving this current campaign, there is very little chance that VAFC beat the drop.

The club have been in terrible form from the start of the season and in a unique year where four teams will be relegated to the Championnat National, VAFC look destined to be among that number.
