Mainz have announced that former Zürich head coach Bo Henriksen is their new head coach and will replace the now departed Jan Siewert.

On bringing the Dane to the Bundesliga, Mainz sports director Christian Heidel says: “We have dealt intensively with our current situation and analyzed which type of coach suits us with which footballing approach in this difficult sporting situation. This has led us to Bo Henriksen, a coach who has repeatedly succeeded in his career and under very different conditions to form teams and to let an equally pragmatic, but also courageous and ultimately successful football play. In addition, Bo Henriksen is a very emotional, open and opinionated character who radiates incredibly positive energy and will fit very well with Mainz 05.”

Henriksen signs a contract at Mainz until 2026. The Dane joins from FC Zürich in Switzerland after he had decided not to extend his contract at the club. This opened the door for him to move to the Bundesliga. He leaves the Swiss side 12 points off of the top in third place.

The manager joins a Mainz side that is 17th in the Bundesliga, with nine points from safety and only one win so far this season. Henriksen will have to work something close to a miracle to save Mainz from relegation but with it looking more certain by the week, if Mainz trusts the Dane, he will be given this extra period to assess the squad heading into the 2.Bundesliga.

Yesterday (Monday), Mainz had announced the firing of coach Siewert who had only taken charge of the team in November but signed a contract until 2026 in December. The former Huddersfield manager had led the club to their sole win this season against RB Leipzig in November.
