VfB Stuttgart have announced that they have completed the permanent signing of defender Leonidas Stergiou from St Gallen.
Stergiou had been on loan at Stuttgart from the Swiss side and has become a more important player in the side in recent weeks. The 22 year old had a buy option in the loan agreement that was said to be worth around €2m, according to Sky Germany. Stergiou signs a contract at Stuttgart until 2028.
On staying at the club, Stergiou said: “I am very happy that I am being trusted. I would like to continue to confirm this with good performance. It was an instructive year for me. In the beginning I needed something, but I joined an excellent team. For me, it was about learning a lot and being there when I was needed. A praise also goes to the coaching team and the entire staff. I am very happy about the course of the season.”
Stuttgart are unlikely to stop there after making the loan move of Stergiou permanent. On loan from Union Berlin, Jamie Leweling is also expected to stay at the MHP Arena. Stuttgart are said to have exercised the €5m buy option in the winger’s loan agreement and he too will sign a contract at the club until 2028, reports Sky Germany.
It had already been reported that loanee Alexander Nübel will also stay at Stuttgart for at least two more seasons after extending his contract at parent club Bayern Munich earier in the season.
