FC Bayern now officially has its new coach: Vincent Kompany has signed a contract with the German record champions.

FC Bayern has officially announced that Vincent Kompany will be the new coach of the German record champions. The 38-year-old Belgian has signed a contract with the Munich club until 2027 and will succeed Thomas Tuchel.

According to media reports, Bayern had already reached an agreement with Kompany’s former club FC Burnley regarding the transfer fee for the coach. The coach actually still had a contract with the relegated Premier League side until 2028 and Bayern are set to pay Burnley €10.5 million, according to BILD.

Kompany said after signing: „I’m looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football. As a coach, you have to stand for what you are as a personality: I love having the ball, being creative – and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and courageous. I’m now looking forward to the very basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow.“

Eberl: „Kompany is hungry and has everything he needs“

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl explained: „We are delighted to have signed Vincent Kompany for FC Bayern. In our talks with him, we were immediately on the same page. He clearly showed us how much FC Bayern appeals to him and that he is keen to take on the challenge.“

He continued: „Vincent Kompany is hungry and has everything he needs: He was already a leading figure in top international football as a player and is also leading the way as a coach. We would like to see more continuity in this position. Together with him, we want to achieve a lot at FC Bayern – and of course be successful together.“

The Kompany deal puts an end to FC Bayern’s long search for a coach. Several coaches such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, Oliver Glasner and Roger Schmidt had previously turned down the German record champions. Negotiations were also held for Tuchel to stay, but no agreement was reached here either.

Kompany was moulded by Guardiola

Kompany was relegated from the Premier League with Burnley this season. The season before, however, he also managed promotion to the English top flight with the club. He previously coached RSC Anderlecht in his home country of Belgium. Kompany had also started his professional career as a player there. He moved from Anderlecht to Hamburger SV in 2006. Kompany still speaks good German from his time in the Hanseatic city.

After two years at HSV, the defender moved to Manchester City in 2008, where he stayed for a total of eleven years. At the Skyblues, he was particularly influenced by coach Pep Guardiola. Kompany moved from Manchester back to Anderlecht in 2019, where he first worked as a player coach and then as head coach.

After his stint at Burnley, Kompany is now ready for the next chapter as coach of FC Bayern.
