FC Köln officially confirmed the capture of Wolfsburg attacker Jakub Kaminski on loan Friday evening. Kicker reports that Köln have secured a €3m purchase option as part of the deal. The 22-times-capped Polish international hopes to revive his career in the cathedral city. Kaminski has not scored a Bundesliga goal in two full seasons.
After joining die Wölfe from Lech Poznan for a €10m fee ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, Kaminski has seen his professional development stall. Kaminski netted four league goals and also scored once in the cup in his first year under then VfL head coach Niko Kovac. In the two seasons since, he’s managed only five assists.
Köln – preparing for their first season back in the top flight – have now procured three attacking additions: Kaminski, Kaiserslautern striker Ragnar Ache, and Fortuna Düsseldorf attacking midfielder Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson. The Geißböcke must still find a way of replacing their two top goal-scorers from last year’s 2. Bundesliga campaign.
Striker Tim Lemperle (ten league goals) has moved to Hoffenheim while forward Damion Downs (who also scored ten league goals) is expected to sign with Southampton in the coming days. Köln were nevertheless pleased to obtain a very versatile attacker. Kaminski can work both attacking flanks and also has experience deeper in midfield.
“With Jakub, we are gaining a player who – despite his young age – already has valuable Bundesliga experience and has proven his qualities,” Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler noted in a club statement welcoming his new 23-year-old signing. “[He brings with him] speed, good footballing skills and a high level of assertiveness, especially in the final third.“
”Köln is a club with a great history,” Kaminski added in his own statement. “It’s great that the club is now back in the Bundesliga. My goal is to take the next step here and be successful together with my new teammates.“
