Olympique de Marseille announced today that they have completed a loan deal for Jean Onana (24) with an option to buy at the end of the season.
The previous season, the midfielder had been a part of a Lens side that pipped Marseille to second in the league. However, a summer move away from Les Sang et Or to Beşiktaş has not continued a strong year for the midfielder.
The former Lens man had struggled to adapt to Turkey and found appearances hard to come by, recording only 188 minutes of football with the club.
Marseille had been in the market for a midfielder due to a lengthy injury to their captain, Valentin Rongier, and multiple absences because of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Onana was not their first choice, with the club originally targeting Lucien Agoumé (21), but when that transfer collapsed Les Phocéens swooped for the Cameroon international.
The fact that Cameroon did not select him for the upcoming tournament perhaps played a part in his eventual loan deal, as the midfielder can represent Marseille immediately. Onana could even be handed his debut in this Friday’s fixture against RC Strasbourg.
