Belgian side RSC Anderlecht have announced the signing of former Leicester City striker Islam Slimani. The 34-year-old joins from Stade Brestois on a deal until the end of the season.
He is Algeria’s all-time top goalscorer with 42 goals across 89 appearances and has spent previous spells in France at AS Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais. His short tenure in Brittany lasted only six months, where he registered a goal and an assist over 16 games in the French top flight. He started the season in the starting 11 but started the last three games from the bench. Late last night, it was announced that he would terminate his contract with Brest to pave the way for a move to neighbouring Belgium.
Brest have flirted with the relegation zone this season, currently in 16th place after 20 games. Slimani’s new club, Anderlecht, have also had a relatively poor start to the 2022/23 season, sitting at 11th in the Belgian top flight. They last played Champions League football in the 2017/18 season, before several years in both the Europa League and Europa Conference League.
