Borussia Dortmund have announced that head coach Niko Kovac has extended his contract at the club until 2027.
Kovac’s original deal was set to expire at the end of the season, as he joined earlier this year, replacing Nuri Sahin as head coach.
On extending his deal, Kovac said:
“We’ve achieved a lot together over the past six months and brought Borussia back on track. As a coaching team, we’ve felt a great deal of trust and the feeling that we can make a difference here together with the club and the fans. The discussions of the past few weeks have further strengthened my conviction: We can continue on the path we’ve chosen with lasting success. With honest work, clear decisions, and great enthusiasm, we want to help Borussia return to its former strength. We still have a lot to do together.”
Since joining earlier this year, Kovac has masterminded a turnaround in Dortmund’s fortunes. When he took charge, playing Champions League football looked like a pipedream, but he led die Schwarzgelben to a fourth-place finish last season.
This season promises to be better; however, Dortmund got off to a poor start, throwing away a 3-1 lead against St.Pauli in their opening game.
Dortmund are also expected to be very active in the transfer market heading into the final week. The club are close to wrapping up deals for Fabio Silva, Aaron Anselmino and the return of Carney Chukwuemeka to the club.
