Raphaël Varane (31) has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
Varane has been blighted by injuries in recent years, and as a result he retired from international duty at the age of just 29 in February 2023. However, despite decreasing his workload, injuries have remained frequent. The Frenchman left Manchester United upon the expiry of his contract this summer, joining newly promoted Serie A side Como on a free transfer.
However, he would make just one appearance for Cesc Fabregas’ side, in the Italian Cup. He then suffered a significant knee injury, which was set to sideline him for several months. As a result, he was left out of Como’s Serie A squad. In the wake of the latest in a series of injury blows, former RC Lens, Real Madrid, and Manchester United defender Varane has decided to call time on his career.
He announced the decision in a social media post on Instagram. He started the lengthy post with the words: “They say all good things must come to an end.”
He added, “In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and with a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”
Varane said that he holds himself “to the highest standard” and therefore wanted to “go out strong, not just holding onto the game.” He added, “It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with the final game, winning a trophy at Wembley (FA Cup with Manchester United).”
The former France international confirmed that he would remain in Como for now and alluded to an announcement about his future plans.
