Florian Grillitsch’s latest departure from Hoffenheim has been officially confirmed. As had been rumored, Grillitsch will be joining SC Braga. The 30-year-old leaves his longtime Bundesliga club for the third time in three years. Hoffenheim have agreed to the dissolution of Grillitsch’s contract in order to allow him to move to the Portuguese outfit on a free.
Grillitsch joined Ajax on a free transfer ahead of the 2022/23 season. He was back in Hoffenheim within a year. After being flatly told that he no longer factored into new head coach Christian Ilzer’s plans last December, a spring 2025 loan out to Real Valladolid was arranged.
Hoffenheim have been attempting to move Grillitsch all summer. Despite the long history of collaboration, the move counts as quite the relief for both parties involved. Both player and club reflected on the broken relationship in their parting statements.
“Florian has made a valuable contribution to TSG over many years and was part of our greatest sporting accomplishments,” Hoffenheim sporting director Andreas Schicker said. “It has nevertheless become clear that we as a club want to go in a different direction. We would like to thank Florian for his commitment and service in the TSG jersey and wish him all the best for his personal and professional future.”
“I will always have fond memories of my time at TSG Hoffenheim,” Grillitsch himself added. “I was able to experience some great sporting moments here and even play in the Champions League with TSG. Unfortunately, the past year did not go as I would have hoped.”
