Former Serie A star Kevin Strootman announced retirement with a brief social media post: ‘Careers come to an end. Thank you, football.’

Former Dutch midfielder Strootman has announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old posted a picture on social media featuring his face and the logos of all the clubs he played for.

The caption read: “Careers come to an end. Thank you, football.”

Strootman spent several years in Italy, playing for Roma, Genoa and Cagliari.

His contract with Genoa expired in June 2024.

Strootman played 157 Serie A matches, scoring ten goals and providing 22 assists.

Many former teammates reacted to the news by commenting on Strootman’s social media post.

Among them are Mattia Perin, Miralem Pjanic, Marten De Roon, Alessandro Florenzi, Edin Dzeko, Denzel Dumfries and Nathan Aké.

Strootman spent the last two seasons of his career at Genoa, helping the Rossoblu return to Serie A in 2022-23 and then helping them survive in the previous campaign, providing two assists in 27 league matches.
