Lyon midfielder Orel Mangala (26) has completed a deadline-day season-long loan move to Everton, both clubs have announced. The Belgium international joined Olympique Lyonnais on an initial loan deal from Nottingham Forest, which was made permanent earlier this summer. However, since arriving at Lyon, Mangala has failed to convince Les Gones with the Ligue 1 side signing USMNT midfielder Tanner Tessmann.
Mangala will spend the 2024-2025 campaign at Everton – a club that Lyon owner John Textor is in the process of purchasing – where he will reunite with former Lyon teammate Jake O’Brien. It is thought that the Toffees offered Lyon a straight loan and that they will pay Mangala’s whole salary for the duration of the season. Lyon were desperate to offload players between now and the closure of the transfer window, having spent heavily in January and earlier this summer, notably in triggering Mangala’s €23m purchase option. Mangala remains tied with Lyon until 2028.
