Olympique de Marseille have officially announced the signing of Elye Wahi (21) from RC Lens for an unconfirmed fee thought to be around €30 million with bonuses included. The former Montpellier HSC striker will join the club on a contract that will keep him in the south of France until 2029.
The arrival of Wahi puts an end to Marseille’s pursuit of a new starting striker with the Frenchman provided the number nine shirt and the keys to Roberto De Zerbi’s attack following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (35) earlier in the summer.
Wahi may not have been the club’s first choice after Aubamyeang was sold to Al Qadisiah, with Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah (25) at one stage being Marseille’s priority. However, Marseille were convinced that they could forge a deal with Lens and secure a forward with a high ceiling for growth and experience leading an attack in Ligue 1.
The striker struggled last season with his big-money move away from Montpellier to Lens but there is a sense that Marseille believe in his ability and hope that under De Zerbi’s tutelage, Wahi will be able to tap into his obvious talent on a more regular basis.
