Real Madrid hosted Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu with the hopes of going top of the table and putting pressure on Girona, who play Deportivo Alaves tomorrow at home.
Carlo Ancelotti started with his best available XI, with Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo spearheading the team, and David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger at the back.
Bellingham opened the scoring 25 minutes in with a superb header, courtesy of a stellar pass from Luka Modric. However, ten minutes after that David Alaba went down clutching his knee, and had to be taken off for Nacho.
Ferland Mendy also suffered an injury in this half, and was replaced by Fran Garcia at half-time.
Reports coming out of Madrid, from Jose Luis Sanchez, claim that Alaba’s injury looks very serious, and the player could be out for a very long time. His injury looks like a sprained internal lateral ligament. He will undergo tests tonight or tomorrow morning.
Mendy, meanwhile, will undergo tests tomorrow. The player was able to complete the first half without much problems, which was a positive sign.
With Eder Militao still out until the end of the season, Alaba’s injury is a huge blow for Madrid, who are in a tight title race with Girona this season. Mendy’s injury should not be a huge blow, though, considering Fran Garcia’s form, who already has four assists in La Liga.
