Official: Carlos Carvalhal leaves Olympiacos after 2 months | OneFootball

Portuguese boss Carlos Carvalhal has left his role as coach of Greek Super League side Olympiacos, just two months after taking charge in Piraeus.

Carvalhal was hired in early December and saw an influx of six Portuguese players during the winter transfer window last month, but departs alongside sporting director Pedro Alves before after a poor run of results with the team 4th in the table.

News of Carvalhal’s departure was confirmed by official communication on Thursday evening after several days of speculation that the former Braga boss would be relieved of his duties. Carvalhal came in for much criticism after Olympiacos lost to fierce rivals Panathinaikos in the ‘Derby of the eternal enemies’ on Sunday.

Sporting director Pedro Alves was also dismissed over disagreements regarding his role at the club. During the January transfer window Olympiacos signed six Portuguese players: André Horta, Gelson Martins, David Carmo, Rúben Vezo, Chiquinho and Jovane Cabral. Former Porto stopper Carmo and ex-Benfica man Chiquinho were in the line-up for Sunday’s defeat, while Vezo and Cabral are yet to make their debuts.

Carvalhal’s tenure saw him take charge of just eleven matches across his two months, winning five, drawing three and with three defeats, including elimination from the Greek Cup on penalties to Panathinaikos. The stint comes after similarly brief spells in charge of UAE club Al Wahda (four months) and Celta Vigo (seven months) in Spain.
