Toulouse FC have officially parted ways with head coach Philippe Montanier and appointed Carlos Martínez Novell as his replacement, the club has announced. Montanier’s future in the Toulouse dugout was in serious doubt following reports of a rift between the board and the former Nottingham Forest head coach over the team’s performance last season. President Damien Comolli had set Montanier the aim of finishing between 10th and 11th place in the league standings, according to statistical projections used by the data-centric club – instead, they have ended the campaign in 13th.

Montanier’s sacking has come despite winning Toulouse a shock Coupe de France title, qualifying the team for next season’s Europa League group stage in the process, only a year after bringing the club back into Ligue 1 by winning the Ligue 2 title. “The Club would like to express its sincere thanks to Philippe Montanier for his professionalism and his commitment, which enabled it to successively win the Ligue 2 BKT title and then the Coupe de France”, the club wrote.

Following Montanier’s official sacking, Toulouse immediately announced the appointment of Carles Martinez Novell as head coach. The Spaniard was Montanier’s assistant coach and the senior squad’s head of methodology. “Since his arrival, he has shown remarkable commitment and played an essential role in the imrovement of the team”, Comolli added.
