FC Girondins de Bordeaux confirmed in a press release today that they would no longer be appealing the decision of the DNCG to relegate the club from Ligue 2 to the Championnat National (the third division of French football.)

Bordeaux confirmed that the takeover discussions between FSG and the club had resumed in recent days, but the sports-holding conglomerate which also owns Liverpool FC had “indicated yesterday… their desire not to follow through despite the assurances provided by various stakeholders.”

Therefore, the club was unable to provide a realistic solution to the DNCG that would address the financial watchdog’s concerns. Bordeaux has accepted their relegation to the third division but will be called before the DNCG to provide their new budget for the 2024/25 season in the lower tier, meaning another sanction (relegation to the fourth tier) is a distinct possibility.

The sixth most successful club and a team that had never played football outside of the first division before 2022 will now be competing for the first time outside of professional football. The future is still not certain for Bordeaux and the health of one of France’s historic clubs remains in jeopardy.
