Stuttgart have today announced the signing of German goalkeeper Alexander Nübel (26) on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich for a reported €800,000.

After Florian Müller returned to Freiburg, the search for a successor began. Realistically, signing a replacement on loan was the only viable option given Stuttgart’s financial situation. Bayern Munich’s Yann Sommer was also an option for the Bundesliga club.

Nübel, who has a contract at Bayern until 2025, will play in Stuttgart for the season before they promote Dennis Seimen to the professional squad as a replacement in 2024. Because of this, and VfB’s situation, the club don’t have a purchase clause to sign Nübel on a permanent basis.

Signed on a free transfer from Schalke in 2020, Nübel was unable to displace Manuel Neuer in goal and was sent on a two-year loan to AS Monaco in 2021. During his time at the principality club, the German played 97 games across all competitions, recording 24 clean sheets.

Remaining at Bayern Munich this summer was a possibility, but Nübel wanted guarantees over playing time, something that the Rekordmeister were unable to offer with Neuer likely returning to be their No. 1 once he returns from injury.
