Official: Barcelona release statement as an update to the European Super League | OneFootball

FC Barcelona have released an official statement regarding their continued involvement in the European Super League. They have also made the comments in response to UEFA’s statement released on the 7th May, stating that there would be strict disciplinary action against the founding clubs who have not distanced themselves from the Super League.

Real Madrid and Juventus are the other clubs alongside Barcelona who partake in this joint statement, as these three are the only teams yet to officially withdraw from the operation. The general gist of the announcement seems that the clubs are still in favour of the project.

Despite the majorly adverse reactions to the European Super League, which has since been temporarily scrapped, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona maintain their position that it needs to be rethought and implemented.

The 12 founding clubs also acknowledged that the Super League was a unique opportunity to offer fans around the world the best possible show and to reinforce global interest in the sport, which is not a “given” and is challenged by new generational trends; the statement reads.

The three remaining clubs also believe that it would be “highly irresponsible” to abandon the entire mission. They have also responded to FIFA and UEFA’s threats of consequences that the founding clubs will face. The statement then reads:

…We reiterate that, to honour our history, to comply with our obligations towards our stakeholders and fans, for the good of football and for the financial sustainability of the sector, we have the duty to act in a responsible manner and persevere in the pursuit of adequate solutions, despite the unacceptable and ongoing pressures and threats received from UEFA.

Barcelona’s future in the ESL is still subject to discussion as the club socios are supposed to vote on the matter in the coming weeks. The controversy which seemed to have died down will now suddenly spark back up.
