Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the semifinal stage of the UEFA Champions League were washed away, no thanks to a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain at home.

The defeat meant PSG won the quarterfinal tie on a 6-4 aggregate despite losing the first leg at Parc des Princes.

Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League could face serious ramifications, especially from an economic perspective.

Elimination from the quarterfinal stage devoids Barça of an additional €12.5 million through prize money and potentially more through stadium revenue.

And in yet another blow, it appears Barcelona have also failed to qualify for the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Catalans’ defeat to PSG means Atletico Madrid will be the second team to represent Spain in the extended format of the Club World Cup in 2025, alongside Real Madrid.

This could serve as a massive blow for Barcelona, as simply participating in the new and extended format of the Club World Cup would have handed them a revenue of around €50 million.

Another €100 million has been reserved for the winners of the Club World Cup. But with Barcelona failing to qualify, the club must once again find other sources of revenue in their attempt to mitigate the current economic downturn.
