Earlier this week, Barcelona defender Gerard Martin suffered a fracture in his right hand while he was playing for Spain at the U-21 European Championships.
The left-back was subsequently ruled out of the tournament and flew back to Barcelona on Thursday, where he would be tested by the club’s medical staff and the next course of treatment would be decided upon.
As expected, Barcelona have confirmed that Martin needs to undergo surgery for the dislocation he has suffered and is all set to be operated on next Tuesday.
In an official statement, the La Liga champions said:
“Gerard Martin has suffered a dislocation at the base of the fifth metacarpal in his right hand and will undergo surgery this Tuesday, performed by Dr. Mir under the supervision of the Club’s Medical Services. An update will be provided after the procedure.”
Martin finished what was his breakthrough season with the Barcelona first-team setup with a return of one goal and six assists from 42 games in all competitions.
A potential recovery timeline for the 23-year-old should emerge once the surgery has been completed which will then define whether he will be ready in time for pre-season or not.
Martin has also been attracting interest from clubs in the Premier League this summer, although the left-back, at the moment, has no plans of leaving Barcelona.
