Sunday night brought with it a double blow for FC Barcelona as not only they lost 3-2 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, their star midfielder Frenkie de Jong also suffered an ankle injury.

The Netherlands international had to be stretchered off the field following the injury on the cusp of half-time and early signs did not look good.

Indeed, sources suggested earlier today that De Jong’s season might well be over and it appears that it is indeed the case.

Barcelona issue official update

Barcelona have officially confirmed that De Jong has sustained a sprain in his right ankle after carrying out tests and scans on the player today at the club’s medical facilities.

“Tests carried out on Monday have confirmed that first-team player Frenkie de Jong has a right ankle sprain,” the statement from the club read.

“He is out and his recovery will determine his availability.”

Out for six weeks

While the statement from the club does not provide an exact recovery timeline, Javi Miguel of AS has confirmed that De Jong is done for the season.

As per the report, the Dutchman has suffered a severe grade two sprain, which will keep him out for a minimum of six weeks.

As such, De Jong will miss Barcelona’s remaining six La Liga matches in the season and will return just in time for the UEFA Euro 2024 this summer.

Heading into the summer, the midfielder’s future at Barcelona remains up in the air, with the club not ruling out his exit.
