Anderlecht have announced the signing of Jan Vertonghen, who joins on a two-year deal from Benfica.

Vertonghen has been looking to leave Benfica this summer with new manager Roger Schmidt dropping him from the starting XI.

Clubs from England have been interested as have Club Brugge, but it emerged in the final week of the transfer window that Anderlecht were close to signing the Belgian international.

It has now been confirmed that he will play for the Pro League this season and next year at the very least with him signing a two-year deal. Given he’s 35, it’s likely he’ll retire at the club.

“Jan is very motivated to give everything for this club in the next two seasons,” said CEO Peter Verbeke.

“He has concrete goals in mind with RSCA. With his winning mentality, experience and of course his qualities, he is a great asset to this core.”
