Official: Alvaro Fernandez joins Benfica on permanent deal from Manchester United | OneFootball

Manchester United have confirmed that defender Alvaro Fernandez has joined Portuguese giants Benfica on a permanent deal.

The news has been officially relayed via United’s official website.

Benfica have also communicated that everything is done and Fernandez is now fully one of their own as he has put pen to paper on a contract running until 2029.

Fernandez joined Benfica in January after United cut short his temporary spell in Spain with Granada.

He didn’t have the best of starts in Portugal as he found it difficult to break into the plans of club boss Roger Schmidt.

However, when Fernandez was given an opportunity in the side, he grabbed it with both opportunities and never looked back.

The Spaniard scored his first goal for the club last month in a 3-1 win against Farense. He has been on a steady upward trajectory ever since.

Fernandez made 16 appearances for the Eagles as they finished second in the Primeira Liga table, only behind champions Sporting Lisbon.

It seems that his performances were good enough to convince Benfica to exercise the option to purchase the player on a permanent basis and keep him at Estadio da Luz well beyond the tenure of his loan spell.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United will have three clauses in the deal to have Fernandez permanently join the Liga NOS giants.

The Red Devils can buy the player back from Benfica and will have the right to match any future offer made for him by another club.

In addition to this, United stand to benefit from any future sale of Fernandez from Benfica.

On paper, it looks like shrewd business from the Reds’ perspective as they have some form of control over Fernandez’s future and can bring him back to Old Trafford should they wish to do so.
