Eintracht loanee Jessic Ngankam speaks in an interview about his injury, the Eagles’ season and the upcoming match at Mainz.

Jessic, the most important question first: how are you? “I’m doing better now, I’m getting back to normal life after the long stay in hospital. I’m on the road to recovery and making progress with every day.”

You were seriously injured in a tackle shortly before the end of the home match against Elversberg on 12 April – a tibia and fibula fracture. After the diagnosis and successful surgery, how long did it take for you to switch to fight mode? “It certainly took two or three days. I was broken at the beginning but the moment I left the hospital, I switched to fight mode.”

What are your thoughts on Eintracht’s season? Have you been cheering them on in front of the television when your diary has allowed in the last few months? “Of course I’m cheering them on. It’s been a strong season, which makes me very happy – also the fact the team got to the quarter-finals in Europe, even if they were unfortunately knocked out recently. The lads can be very proud of themselves. I’ve particularly watched the Europa League matches on TV, but also the Bundesliga games now and then when I’m not on the pitch with 96.”

Eintracht play Mainz away on Sunday evening. If results go well, Frankfurt can secure Champions League qualification, while Mainz are also in the hunt for the European places. What sort of game are you expecting? “I’m expecting a very intense game, where emotions will also be high. But obviously I hope that Frankfurt win.”

Mainz are unbeaten in 11 home matches. You know the club, you played for them in the second half of last season, when Bo Henriksen took over as coach. What awaits Eintracht there on Sunday? “Mainz will push themselves to the limit, throw themselves into every tackle and do everything to get the points. The team have developed very well, which can certainly be put down to Bo Henriksen.”

A prediction for the match? “Eintracht to win 2-1!”
