On Tuesday, New York City FC will play the final game of Phase One in the Leagues Cup against Deportivo Toluca Fútbol Club. This will be the toughest match on paper, but the result will likely not matter. Despite beating Club León, the Pigeons lost their first game against Club Puebla. While the team is not officially eliminated from making the quarterfinals, they are unofficially done after this game since four of 18 Major League Soccer teams make the knockout rounds, meaning that nobody could afford to lose a game.
It would take a miracle for NYCFC to move on. Eight teams ahead of them would have to lose, and the Pigeons would have to defeat Deportivo Toluca. The Liga MX side is in fourth place right now in the Leagues Cup standings. In their league, they are currently second after three matches. Plus, they finished last season’s Apertura in second place and the Clausura in first place.
Therefore, as mentioned, this will be the most challenging fixture of Phase One. But similar to the last match, the question remains what Pascal Jansen will do. Will he play his best players and attempt to win regardless of what happens around the tournament? Or will he play his youth and those who barely get minutes?
Of course, if the head coach had chosen a different lineup in the first game, then it is possible the discussion would be about NYCFC trying to win and score as many goals as possible. After three fixtures, the number of goals could make the difference as well. Nevertheless, the Boys in Blue’s goal might be to finish the Leagues Cup strongly. Or, Jansen will want to see who can help contribute to the team for the rest of the season.

If Jansen does decide to go with the less experienced and youthful lineup, he should still play Alonso Martínez. The team always has a higher chance of scoring when the Costa Rican plays. NYCFC still needs to fight, and it would be incredible if they could beat Toluca.
