New York City FC is still riding the high of the team’s 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls. The Pigeons showed a little of what they can do in the win and highlighted the need for consistency. They have shown they can compete with competitive sides, but have lacked that needed consistency with their play. Hence, winning a second-straight game in a row would increase the confidence of the team.
That is why it is vital for NYCFC to secure all three points at home against Chicago Fire FC. The Boys in Blue have dominated the series over the last few years. They last lost to the Windy City team in 2021. Since 2022, they have won three times and shared the points three times. Notably, both of last year’s games ended in draws, so the home side will try to beat them again.
It will not be easy with Chicago’s Hugo Cuypers leading the team. The forward has eight goals so far this season, tied for third place in the Golden Boot race. He has been one of the top scorers since he joined the Fire last year. He has 18 goals in the two regular seasons so far, and is already doing better in 2025. Additionally, the Pigeons will have to deal with Jonathan Bamba, who leads the team with six assists.
That is why NYCFC will need their attackers to step up. Hopefully, the Hudson River Derby goal from Alonso Martínez will spark the Costa Rican to score multiple goals in a row again, similar to what he did earlier this year. While Maxi Moralez finally scored his first goal last week, the team needs the wingers to find the back of the net as well to find that consistency and beat Chicago.

Yankee Stadium used to be a fortress, but slowly over the last few years, more teams have been able to find ways to win at the stadium. NYCFC has lost their previous two matches there this year. Losing a third one in a row will mean that Yankee Stadium is no longer a dangerous place for other teams. So, the Boys in Blue must win.
