When Santiago Rodríguez left New York City FC, it was clear the club desperately needed new signings. As everyone knows, the primary transfer window was somewhat quiet, with Aiden O'Neill arguably being the biggest signing. But now, the wait is over, for NYCFC has their first major signing for the summer.
NYCFC has acquired Nicolás Fernández Mercau and has signed him through 2029. The player is coming from Elche CF in the second division in Spain, where he was a versatile player for the side. However, the Boys in Blue are signing him as a central-attacking midfielder, with the belief he can be the replacement for Maxi Moralez. More importantly, this will allow Moralez to rest more to ensure he continues to play at a top level.
Fernández Mercau is a solid signing for NYCFC. He helped Elche get promoted back to the top division in Spain, LaLiga. He also scored 11 goals across in three seasons with the club, with his best season being the most recent one. He scored seven goals and had ten assists in all competitions.
Notably, this success came during his first full year as the number ten. Previously, he has been mostly utilized as a left-midfielder and left-back, with him spending most of his time as a left-winger during the 2023-2024 season. Of course, the 25-year-old was the most productive as an attacking midfielder.
However, that is only one season's worth of documentation. As such, it is not guaranteed that he will be the successor to Moralez. The good news is that he can play all over the left side of the pitch, so NYCFC has a good player regardless. Fernández Mercau can also be considered a backup when other players are injured or unavailable. This makes him a solid and smart signing.
Plus, the Bronx side finally has another Designated Player. The Argentine can sign as a DP since Talles Magno is away on loan. Perhaps NYCFC will also change their roster designation this summer and bring in another DP.
Meanwhile, Fernández Mercau described his playing style in the best way possible. He told newyorkcityfc.com, "I would describe myself as a player who enjoys having the ball, attacking, and getting into goal-scoring positions. I love the game and try to bring that joy onto the pitch, whether that means going forward or helping the team defensively when things get tough. For me, it’s all about staying connected with my teammates and doing everything I can to help the team succeed."
This sounds like the perfect player for NYCFC. He will be eligible to make his debut after July 24, when the secondary transfer window officially opens.
