Borussia Dortmund suffered a calamitous 5-1 defeat at Stuttgart on Sunday afternoon with Nuri Şahin’s side now eighth, five points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
Die Schwarzgelben found themselves 2-0 down inside 21 minutes with goals from Deniz Undav and Ermedin Demirović. Enzo Millot then added a third for the Swabian club before Serhou Guirassy pulled a goal back for Dortmund against his former club.
But it went from bad to worse after El Bilal Touré got off the mark for the season before Undav added his second of the afternoon as Dortmund capitulated.
“The basics were missing,” Şahin told DAZN. “Then something like today happens. It was bad from the first to the last minute.”
Borussia Dortmund came into the game after a 3-0 win against Club Brugge in midweek, and the team had trained well in preparation for their game against Stuttgart: “We were sharp before the match. The way we performed, it can’t have anything to do with physical tiredness. You can find a million excuses, but none of them are valid,” added Şahin.
Stuttgart trumped Borussia Dortmund in every key metric, which was noted by Şahin: “That was a poor performance. You can’t play like that as Borussia Dortmund.
“I never want to see a game like that again. We’ll analyse the game rigorously.”
