Over the past few weeks, there has been considerable change at Borussia Dortmund.

With Edin Terzić departing the Westfalenstadion after guiding Die Schwarzgelben to the Champions League final, he has been replaced by former Dortmund midfielder Nuri Şahin.

As well as this, key players such as Niclas Füllkrug, Mats Hummels, and Marco Reus have departed, while a number of signings have been made to fill the voids left at the club.

With a significant amount of change occurring at Dortmund, questions were being asked about whether Şahin would keep Emre Can as club captain or if he would look to offer the armband to goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Regardless, as previously reported, the 35-year-old has elected to continue Can’s captaincy of the club.

As well as this, speaking to Sky Germany after BvB’s friendly with Villarreal, Şahin outlined the hierarchy at the club:

“Emre Can is our captain, our vice captain is Julian Brandt, and the third captain is Nico Schlotterbeck. On the team council are Marcel Sabitzer and Gregor Kobel.”

“I told him (Kobel) that I wanted to have a connection on the pitch with an outfield player. He took it very professionally and said that he fully supports me.”

With the new season set to begin in just under two weeks when Dortmund take on 1. FC Phönix Lübeck in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, it will be intriguing to see whether the new hierarchy at Dortmund is effective with less experienced professionals.
