Nuno's verdict on West Ham

Nuno Espirito Santo found Sunday’s 1-0 loss at West Ham tough to take as he felt ‘we controlled all the game’.

Unfortunately, one moment decided it, and it came in our penalty area on 72 minutes. Hugo Lloris had just made the save of the game to deny Pablo Fornals’ deflected shot but Aaron Cresswell floated over the corner, Lucas Moura and Oliver Skipp couldn’t connect at the near post and Michail Antonio prodded home from six yards.

We dominated possession - over 62% - and territory, but often the final pass went astray, or we simply couldn’t break through the packed ranks of the home defence. Our best chances fell to Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane in the first half, Kane’s header tipped over by Fabianski and we got behind West Ham three times in the second half only for Fabianski to cut out the final pass twice and the third, from Sergio Reguilon, flying behind Skipp, who would have had a tap in.

“I thought we were better throughout the game, we played better, controlled the game, had possession,” reflected Nuno. “In the first half we had chances that we need to be more accurate on.

All the game was under control, just a moment on a set piece where maybe we lacked a bit of focus, we need to be more aggressive in that moment, and we conceded. After that, until the end, we tried to achieve the goal we deserved.

“But we controlled all the game, honestly. We were prepared and did a good job, aspects that we have to improve are to be aggressive in the final third, the final pass being more accurate, but we’ll get there.”

Asked how it was in the dressing room, and Nuno responded: “We’re disappointed, like everybody, like our fans, it’s always tough to lose a match like this.”
