Super-sub NĂșñez pulls off dramatic win for 10-man Liverpool

Scorers: Gordon 25â€Č; NĂșñez 81â€Č, 90+3â€Č

Sent off: Van Dijk (Liverpool) 28â€Č

Substitute Darwin NĂșñez was the man of the moment when he came off the bench to score twice as Liverpool pulled off an incredible comeback away at Newcastle.

The visitors had been reduced to 10-men when Virgil van Dijk was sent off just after they’d gone 1-0 down to an Anthony Gordon goal in the first half.

But late substitute NĂșñez scored his first two goals of the season to seal a memorable victory for the Reds.

Newcastle named an unchanged side from the one which lost at Manchester City last weekend, while Wataru Endo made his first start for Liverpool.

Neither side gave too much away in the opening stages, with Joelinton and Gordon only forcing Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson into comfortable saves in the 15 minutes.

Liverpool’s best early chance came two minutes later, when Luis Díaz forced Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope into a save at his near post after a brilliant run.

The deadlock was broken in the 25th minute, and it came courtesy of a huge error from Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who mis-controlled a Mohamed Salah pass straight into the path of Gordon.

The former Everton winger raced through on goal and slotted past Alisson for his second Premier League goal in Newcastle colours.

And the situation then went from bad to worse for the Reds when defender Van Dijk was sent off for bringing down Alexander Isak on the edge of the penalty area.

Joe Gomez came on to replace DĂaz but Newcastle almost increased their lead when a stunning strike from Miguel AlmirĂłn was somehow kept out by an even more stunning Alisson save.

Newcastle cautiously went hunting for a second goal in the second half, with Gordan flashing a shot wide before Sven Botman went close with a header.

Botman was again involved moments later at the other end when substitute Diogo Jota slipped in Salah, but the Dutch defender slid in brilliantly to snuff out the chance.

Almirón then again went close to scoring when he unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the area, but this time the post came to Liverpool’s rescue.

And St James’ Park was stunned moments later when Liverpool substitute NĂșñez equalised. The Uruguayan ran through on goal after Botman couldn’t intercept Jota’s pass, before firing in low off the post for his first goal of the season.

Remarkably, NĂșñez wasn’t done there, and in stoppage time he found himself through on goal again. Once again the 24-year-old finished brilliantly to win the game in dramatic style.

Rodri rescues City late on

Scorers: Bogle 85â€Č; Haaland 63â€Č, Rodri 88â€Č

Manchester City struck late for victory at Sheffield United – moments after conceding an equaliser that looked like seeing the champions drop points.

City were without Pep Guardiola who is still recuperating in Spain after back surgery, leaving assistant Juanma Lillo to oversee things on the touchline.

But he was left frustrated when his side were awarded a penalty when John Egan’s outstretched arm handled in the area to block Julian Álvarez’s attempted cross.

From the spot, Erling Haaland dragged his effort against the post, having sent the goalkeeper the wrong way before the Norwegian then had two big appeals for further penalties waved away after being dragged down inside the area.

Haaland’s exasperation continued after half-time when he steered the ball wide from just outside the six-yard box after being picked out in space in the centre before Wes Foderingham came up with a huge save to deny him.

But after denying him for just over an hour, United were finally beaten by the striker when he struck with a towering back post header from a deep Jack Grealish cross.

City then handed Sheffield United a late leveller with five minutes remaining when Kyle Walker attempted a backheel in his own area which lost possession and the ball was worked right for Jayden Bogle who found the far corner.

However, the parity lasted for just three minutes as City swiftly regained the lead when Walker made amends for his error to keep the ball alive out wide and cut back for Rodri inside the area to thump home emphatically.

As a result of that late drama, City are the only team with a 100% record after three games, while the Blades are one of four sides who are yet to pick up a point.

Cash is king for Villa

Scorers: Foster 47â€Č; Cash 8â€Č, 20â€Č, Diaby 60â€Č

Aston Villa picked up back-to-back wins as a Matty Cash double set them up for victory at Burnley.

Fresh from their impressive 5-0 European win in midweek, Villa got off to the perfect start at Turf Moor when Matty Cash put them ahead on eight minutes, turning in at the back post from an Ollie Watkins assist.

It was his first goal in over a year and came on his 100th appearance for the club and after waiting so long to get among the goals, another quickly followed as he got forward to collect a Moussa Diaby pass and drill home.

Villa’s comfortable lead was instantly eaten into two minutes after half time when Burnley pulled one back as stand-in goalkeeper Robin Olsen was beaten by Lyle Foster who spun clear and fired home.

After opening the Clarets’ scoring account for the season, Foster came close to adding a second on the hour mark but saw his header well saved by Olsen nd within moments, Villa struck to double their lead again through Diaby to put the game beyond Burnley’s grasp.

Their wait for a first win goes on, while Unai Emery’s side move up to sixth with the victory.
