Liverpool were able to salvage a point against Crystal Palace on Monday night in a match where new signing Darwin Núñez was shown a straight red card for headbutting Joachim Andersen.

Wilfried Zaha gave the visitors the lead in the first half, before Luis Díaz equalised for the 10-man hosts with his first goal of the season.

Liverpool dominated the early stages but it was Palace who took the lead against the run of play in the 32nd minute, when Eberechi Eze skipped superbly past Fabinho before playing Zaha in with a great ball to slot past Alisson for 1-0.

Núñez then thought he’d equalised for Liverpool in first half stoppage time, but the Uruguayan was unable to get a clean connection on his shot and it bounced agonisingly out off the post.

Another opportunity came Núñez’s way at the start of the second half when he was slipped in by Mohamed Salah, but Joel Ward did well to slide across and block the shot, with referee Paul Tierney waving away handball claims from the Liverpool players.

Then, in the 57th minute, Núñez’s home debut for the club ended in disappointing fashion when he was shown a straight red card for clearly headbutting Andersen.

The Reds kept going, however, and soon found an equaliser when Díaz fired in brilliantly from outside the area for his first goal of the season.

Zaha then went close to putting Palace back in front when he was found at the back post by an excellent Cheick Doucouré cross, but the Ivorian could only rattle the post on the stretch.

It was then Salah’s turn to go close to giving Liverpool the lead with a snapshot from the edge of the box in the 87th minute, but it flew just wide of the post.

Next up for Jürgen Klopp’s side is a trip to Old Trafford next Monday, while Palace welcome Aston Villa to Selhurst Park on Saturday.
