York City boss Adam Hinshelwood is one of the names that is still high in the list of bookmaker odds to land the vacant Notts County manager’s position.

The 41-year-old has been one of the top contenders in the eyes of the bookies since the job became open, as the League Two side look to appoint a replacement for Stuart Maynard.

Hinshelwood has been in charge of York since February 2024 after moving from National League South outfit Worthing, and led the Minstermen to a second place finish in the National League last year, amassing 96 points in the regular season.

His side missed out on promotion though with a play-off semi-final defeat to Oldham Athletic - the same fate Maynard suffered as Notts County boss in League Two.

When asked about Hinshelwood potentially taking charge, FLW’s Notts County fan pundit Jack Richardson claimed it’s not a move they should consider.

He believes the 41-year-old’s lack of experience is an issue, and that the Magpies need someone who knows the league and knows how to gain promotion.

“No, I don’t think he’s one that should be considered,” Richardson told Football League World.

“He’s got no experience of the Football League.

“Yes, he did well at York, but he fell the final hurdle.

“I feel like Notts need to go for someone with a wealth of experience, who has got promoted before and knows the league, and, as I said before, Hinshelwood could be a big risk.

“I feel like it’s just going for the cheap option.”

Notts County earned a sixth place finish in League Two last season before losing 2-0 to AFC Wimbledon in the play-off semi-finals, which led to Maynard departing the club after a failure to gain promotion.

Adam Hinshelwood’s lack of experience doesn’t mean he couldn't work for Notts County

Hinshelwood has not managed at an EFL level before, but he came close to bringing York City back to League Two last year after coming 20th in the previous campaign.

His style of attacking football was always likely to attract interest after the Yorkshire outfit missed out on promotion, and Notts County could be a good fit.

While it would be a risk to appoint someone with no experience at this level, it could be a risk worth taking as a replacement for Maynard.

Hinshelwood has done a good job with York City, and could end up being a solid appointment by Notts County if they decide to pull the trigger on it - although backed by Matt Uggla's finances, they are a wealthy proposition for the National League, so it may be a hard task for the Magpies to get him out of the LNER Community Stadium.
