Nottingham Forest will reportedly have to pay Aberdeen £1m if they secure promotion to the Premier League due to a clause included in the deal to sign Scott McKenna.

According to Aberdeen Live, the Scottish outfit included an add-on clause as part of the agreement which saw McKenna join Forest for an initial fee believed to be in the region of £3m in 2020.

After making 24 appearances for the Reds during the previous campaign, the defender has played a crucial role in his side’s promotion push this season.

McKenna has featured in all but one of the club’s fixtures during the regular term and lined up for Forest in both legs of their semi-final with Sheffield United.

After defeating the Blades 2-1 at Bramall Lane, the Reds managed to prevail on penalties last night in front of their supporters.

Brennan Johnson extended Forest’s advantage on aggregate in the first-half of this fixture before the Blades took the game to extra-time following strikes from Morgan Gibbs-White and John Fleck.

Brice Samba produced an heroic display in the penalty shoot-out as he saved three spot-kicks to help his side book a trip to Wembley Stadium.

Forest will finally secure a return to the top-flight later this month if they beat Huddersfield Town in the play-off final.

The Verdict

When you consider that Forest will receive an uplift in revenue believed to be in the region of £160m over three years if they beat Huddersfield in the play-off final, they won’t be too concerned by the fact that they will need to fork out £1m for McKenna.

The Reds secured somewhat of a bargain when they signed the defender as he has gone on to excel in the Championship.

During the current campaign, McKenna has made 3.6 clearances and has won 3.7 aerial duels per game at this level.

Currently averaging a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.80 in the second-tier, McKenna will be confident in his ability to deliver the goods against Huddersfield on May 29th.
