Nottingham Forest are preparing to submit a £10m bid in an attempt to lure Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien to the City Ground this summer, according to a report from Alan Nixon’s Patreon.

The 23-year-old has been one of the first names on the teamsheet at the John Smith’s Stadium in recent seasons, with multiple Premier League sides thought to have been interested in his signature last summer.

When were the club founded?

During the 2021/22 campaign, he recorded 50 appearances in all competitions, recording three goals and three assists in the process, though those statistics don’t represent the real impact he had in West Yorkshire.

O’Brien still has three years left on his current contract which would have put the Terriers in a strong position – but he is thought to have a release clause of around £12m – though Forest look set to try their luck with a lower offer.

According to Nixon, the Terriers are willing to cash in on one of their prized assets this summer following their failure to win promotion to the top flight.

However, one team that aren’t set to be in the race for his signature are Norwich City, who are interested in taking him to Carrow Road but aren’t prepared to fork out the money needed to take him away from their Championship rivals.

The Verdict:

Forest are in desperate need of adding a midfielder to their squad because even if Ainsley Maitland-Niles joins, he will be needed on the right-hand side at this stage with a replacement yet to come in for Djed Spence.

Technically, O’Brien is superb and this is why he could be an excellent replacement for James Garner, who may not be returning to the East Midlands next term if he can impress Erik ten Hag in pre-season.

Although they should be looking to maintain contact with United regarding a potential fresh move for the 21-year-old, they have to be proactive and look at other targets as well.

There’s every chance United won’t make a decision on his future until later in the window and if they bank on the young midfielder returning, they could be left disappointed and with a shortage of options in the middle of the park if he remains at Old Trafford.

Both potential signings don’t exactly have a huge amount of top-tier experience between them – but both are ready to take the step up and considering his age – O’Brien will only get better in the coming years so this would be a good addition for the Reds.
