Steve Cooper’s first piece of transfer business as Nottingham Forest manager could be to raid his former club as the Reds have been linked with a January transfer swoop for Jay Fulton, per The Sun on Sunday (September 19, page 61).

Cooper’s appointment at the City Ground hasn’t officially been confirmed yet, however it’s thought to be close to completion with Forest agreeing a compensation package with the Swans, who are still paying his contract despite his July departure.

Forest may have gotten off the mark finally at the eighth time of asking in the Championship with a win over Huddersfield Town, but it looks as though January transfer plans are already being discussed and Cooper looks likely to swoop for a former favourite of his in Fulton.

The 27-year-old Scottish midfielder played 81 times under Cooper in two years in the Championship, although their last memory together wasn’t a fond one as he was sent off in the play-off final against Brentford.

Fulton has played three times so far in the league this season under new manager Russell Martin but has been benched for the last three matches, with Flynn Downes preferred to partner Matt Grimes and it means that the Welsh side could be receptive to a mid-season transfer bid.

The Verdict

Fulton was pretty much an ever-present under Cooper, so it’s a surprise to see that Martin isn’t really using him at Swansea.

He clearly sees the younger Downes as a better option to play alongside Grimes right now, but Fulton is surely good enough to play his part over the course of the season.

That being said, Cooper going to Forest could really turn his head as he’s a manager that clearly trusts Fulton’s abilities.

Fulton only extended his deal earlier this year at the Swans until 2024, so it may not be cheap to prize him away from the Liberty Stadium but we’ve seen the likes of Jamal Lowe go for what could be perceived as below their market value, so it may not be difficult for Forest to strike a deal.
