Nottingham Forest are still firmly in the race to sign Southampton striker Che Adams, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The newly promoted side have been extremely busy this summer, adding more than 10 new faces to their squad, although boss Steve Cooper is still hoping to make further signings before 1 September.

What’s the latest news involving Adams?

Despite bringing in ex-Liverpool man Taiwo Awoniyi, Cooper opted to start with Sam Surridge and Brennan Johnson against Newcastle on Saturday, which appeared to suggest that he isn’t satisfied with his striker options.

Therefore, the City Ground club are still trying to bring in another frontman, which could happen in the shape of Adams, who’s available to leave Southampton before, according to The Athletic.

This comes after Football Insider claimed that Forest had opened talks with Saints for the Scot’s services, although they face competition from Leeds for Adams, who joined for £15m from Birmingham three years ago.

Despite the stiff competition, Jones reckons that signing a striker with a proven top-flight record would be “handy” for the Midlands outfit on their return to the Premier League.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They are at least a couple of players short. A striker is one they could do with, and a proven Premier League one would be really handy, so I’m definitely not ruling Nottingham Forest out at the moment.”

What is Adams’ record in the Premier League?

Adams doesn’t exactly have a prolific record since he signed from Birmingham back in 2019, but he’s definitely proven that he can score goals this level.

In 96 appearances, the 26-year-old has scored 20 goals and added 11 assists, which equates to a goal every 4.8 matches.

But when you consider that he’s started 65 of those 96 games, his record suddenly doesn’t appear so bad.

Therefore, Adams has directly contributed to a goal every 187.7 minutes during his time in the Premier League, which is an incredibly decent return playing for a team that generally struggle to find the net.

Jesse Lingard aside, most of Forest’s attackers are unproven at top-flight level, so Adams would definitely improve them on that front, with their potential goalscoring woes already on display in their opening day defeat at Newcastle, with Cooper’s men unable to register a single attempt on target.
