Gary O’Neill is not being pursued by Middlesbrough as a potential replacement for Chris Wilder.

According to The Yorkshire Post, the Championship club are not expected to make a formal approach to hire the current Bournemouth interim-manager.

It is believed that the Cherries are hoping to keep the 39-year old as uncertainty continues to surround the ownership situation at the Vitality Stadium.

Carlos Corberan has also been ruled out of contention, with the Spaniard currently available following his dismissal from Olympiacos.

However, current Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper would be of interest to the Boro hierarchy should he become available.

The Reds’ manager is currently under increasing pressure following the team’s difficult start to life back in the Premier League, with the likes of Rafa Benitez, Sean Dyche, Bruno Lage and Nuno Espirito Santo all linked with potentially replacing the former England underage manager.

Win Draw Loss

Leo Percovich is set to take charge of the team on an interim basis, with the team set to face Birmingham City later this evening.

Boro find themselves 22nd in the Championship heading into Wednesday night’s clash.

The Verdict

It would be a big risk for Boro to wait on making an appointment on the off-chance that Cooper does become available.

The pursuit of O’Neill was always going to be a complicated process given his current situation at Bournemouth.

Corberan could have been a good appointment given the work he did with Huddersfield Town so it is interesting that they are not pursuing him either.

If they are looking to make an appointment ahead of this weekend’s clash with Millwall then time is running out, with no obvious favourite currently stepping forward for the role.
