Oliver Mintzlaff jokes about FC Bayern’s unsuccessful search for a coach so far. The Red Bull boss also reveals a detail from the negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann.

Oliver Mintzlaff finds FC Bayern’s unsuccessful search for a coach amusing. With regard to the high transfer fee that Munich paid to RB Leipzig for coach Julian Nagelsmann in 2021, Mintzlaff joked in the „Spielmacher“ podcast: „Apart from that, FC Bayern has always been a very good customer of ours. But we currently have nothing we can offer them for, let’s say, 25 million.“

At the time, Mintzlaff was CEO of RB Leipzig. He is now head of the club’s supervisory board and, above all, CEO of drinks giant Red Bull.

Bayern are struggling to find a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who was supposed to leave the club after the season following a decision in February. However, they then unsuccessfully endeavoured to find Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Ragnick and Oliver Glasner. In the meantime, those responsible at the German record champions are probably holding negotiations with Tuchel about him staying.

Mintzlaff on Nagelsmann: „Would have liked to keep him“

Meanwhile, Mintzlaff is still mourning the departure of Nagelsmann to Munich: „I would have liked to have kept him,“ said the 48-year-old.

The Red Bull club „might also have become German champions“ with Nagelsmann, believes Mintzlaff.

He revealed that he strictly rejected an exit clause when signing Nagelsmann from Hoffenheim. He also accepted that. „And then we get up and he says: ‚But if FC Bayern calls, then I want us to at least talk to each other‘. That’s when I made my move,“ said Mintzlaff.

The then head of sport Ralf Rangnick also agreed. They remained adamant that they would „sit down at a table“ if Bayern made an offer. This did indeed materialise and Bayern ended up paying Leipzig 25 million for Nagelsmann.
