Luton Town defender Dan Potts has revealed he fractured his back against Blackpool in November, giving new manager Rob Edwards his first injury headache of his reign at Kenilworth Road.

The 28-year-old had been one of the Hatters’ regulars during the opening stages of the campaign, starting the opening 15 games of the season. That run ended prior to Watford defeat though due to a sickness bug, before returning against Reading and Sunderland prior to the Blackpool game.

Potts landed heavily when clearing the ball away. It looked fairly innocuous at the time and after receiving treatment, he tried to carry on more than once.

Potts eventually conceded defeat though and was substituted in the 20th minute with Town going onto the win the game 1-0 in his absence.

Potts has now confirmed via his private Instagram page that the injury is more serious than first expected. He wrote: “Not the news I wanted or expected but turns out I fractured my back away at Blackpool.

“Thankfully the winter break gives me a bit more time to recover & hopefully I’ll be back out there to help the boys & new manager as soon as possible.”

Edwards would have no doubt wanted to ensure he had a full list of fit players for the World Cup break so he can run the rule over his new side. Instead he will be without the experienced Potts which will no doubt be a blow.

The Verdict

Potts hasn’t confirmed the extent of the injury, nor the length of time he will be out injured for. However, it’s a blow regardless and shows how innocuous certain injuries can be.

Supporters will be hoping Potts can get back to full fitness as soon as possible as well considering their previous injury problems last season.

But, Luton do have the depth to cope with the injury which is a testament to the quality Jones brought in, as well as the versatility of each player. That will help immensely as the season progresses and will no doubt impact where they finish this season.
