Former Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku emerges as a target for City

According to The Telegraph, former Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku is on the radar of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The 27-year-old spent two seasons at United before leaving for Inter Milan in the summer of 2019. He made 96 appearances for United, scoring 43 goals and assisting 13 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The Belgian’s numbers bely what many fans view as an unsuccessful spell in Red. He has since gone on to resurrect his career at the San Siro.

With 51 goals and 9 assists in just 74 appearances, he has been one of the best forwards in the Italian top flight. In fact, his numbers have improved since leaving Old Trafford.

This has garnered the interest of our city rivals. With Sergio Aguero’s contract winding down, they will need to replace the Argentine this summer.

Even if Aguero does end up extending his stay beyond this season, City are keen to bring in another striker.

Lukaku is, however, not the only striker on their radar. Pep Guardiola’s side are also keeping tabs on Dortmund ace Erling Haaland and Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

The Belgian is currently only behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Serie-A top scorer this season. Having fallen short last season, the Nerazzurri are pushing arch-rivals AC Milan hard at the Serie A summit.

If he does return to England, Lukaku will have played for four English top-flight sides. He spent a brief time at Chelsea, before developing into a prolific scorer at Everton.

Lukaku is by no means a bad player and can thrive in the right system. Pep Guardiola helped develop players such as Samuel Eto and Robert Lewandowski into powerhouses and could do the same with Lukaku.

The prospect of him returning to Manchester and go on to succeed for our rivals is a sobering thought indeed.
