Alan Hutton believes that Mike Ashley will provide funds for transfers this summer after the collapse of the Saudi-backed Newcastle United takeover bid.

The former Aston Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the Magpies’ initial plans have been “scuppered” after the Amanda Staveley-fronted consortium pulled their takeover bid.

The Telegraph report that talks between American businessman Henry Mauriss and current owner Ashley have been speeding up since the start of July but that there is still work to be done.

However, Hutton believes that it would be difficult for new investors to get themselves settled in to St James’ Park and get things like transfers done before the new Premier League campaign kicks off.

As a result, he believes Ashley will dip his hand into his pocket and fund new signings despite his desire to get rid of the club.

Asked if he thought it was too late for prospective new owners to implement their plans before next season, Hutton told Football Insider: “I would say so. Even if the new people came in now, it’s still difficult.

“I know there’s a fair amount of time left in the transfer window but to come in, get yourself settled, understand what the manager wants to do in terms of moving forward and bringing players in, that’s difficult.

“To not even have new owners in, it’s going to be tough so I think this transfer window, I wouldn’t say over because I think Mike Ashley, when he’s needed to, he will put something into it.

“I think their plans are basically scuppered, I don’t think it’ll go the way they thought it would.”

Newcastle had a hit-and-miss summer in terms of recruitment last year as the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Emil Krafth joined the club.

The French winger has established himself as a firm fan favourite with his performances but the Brazilian looks an expensive mistake after just one Premier League goal all season.
