FLW's Southampton fan pundit has given his verdict on links to both David Wagner and Eric Ramsay
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Former Man United and Chelsea coach Eric Ramsay has been interviewed about the managerial vacancy at Southampton.
According to Talksport, the Saints have been in talks with the Minnesota United manager about being Ivan Juric’s permanent replacement.
However, it’s understood that he is not under serious consideration for the role at this time.
David Wagner has also emerged as a potential contender for the role, having previously led Huddersfield Town to Premier League promotion in 2017.
When asked about the prospect of either manager being hired, FLW’s Southampton fan pundit Martin Sanders claimed neither would be his preferred choice.
He believes that Danny Rohl is the ideal candidate to take on the first team squad, with the German also being linked with the vacancy.
“This is so Sport Republic, who own Southampton Football Club,” Sanders told Football League World.
“No, I’m not happy with either to be quite honest, certainly not Eric Ramsay.
“He’s got no track record, we need a proven manager that knows the Championship.
“I guess Wagner gives you that, he knows the division, knows what it takes.
“Do I think he’s a fit, and somebody that would please the Southampton fans right now? No.
“There’s a bit of talk that the club is up for sale, though it’s being denied by the ownership, but it has been rumoured [Monday].
“Simon Jordan was talking about it on Talksport I believe, but I want to see the fans' favourite from the fan chats that I do on my channel when I create my matchday shows.
“The standout name that comes up every time I ask is Danny Rohl.
“That is what everybody wants as a fanbase.
“The two above, not for me.”
Southampton have had their relegation to the Championship confirmed already, with four Premier League games still to play this season.
Wagner has a solid track record in the Championship, and there’s no doubt he could make a return to the league in the future and do well.
But he’s not the most ambitious name that Southampton could look to hire, as they’ll be looking for a top two spot in the league next year and Wagner’s not been able to achieve that before in his career.
Ramsay would be the greater unknown, making him a potentially risky appointment.
While he’s coached at the likes of Chelsea and Man United, and is now gaining experience as a manager in the United States, he would be too risky for the Saints at this stage of his career.
