Former Norwich City star Iwan Roberts believes that the Canaries would display the mindset of mid-table mediocrity if they let in-form Borja Sainz leave in the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old winger is in red-hot form this season, as he has scored eleven goals in 15 games for Norwich.

It is suggested that Sainz’s performances have attracted attention from several clubs and they might come up with an offer in January to take the winger away from Carrow Road.

Roberts believes that if Norwich accept a bid for Sainz in the upcoming window, then it will display a mindset of mid-table mediocrity and indicated that his departure would be like giving up on promotion hopes.

He pointed out that Norwich might be able to get a fee in the region of £30m for him in January, but it will be impossible to replace Sainz in the same window, and he added that seeing the forward leave in the winter would be disappointing for his team-mates.

“God forbid he would leave in January, but if he did – then you’re throwing the towel in really”, Roberts wrote in his Norwich Evening News column.

“You’ve accepted mid-table mediocrity, maybe a top-half finish.

“If you lose him, you might get money to invest, but you’re not going to get another Borja Sainz, especially in January.

“We may be talking a value of £30m now, which I don’t think is out of the question – but say in the next 31 games he gets, what, 13 or 14 goals – 25 goals from the left wing.

“In that case, you’d be talking £45m or £50m.

“And if you’re one of his team-mates and he goes in January, what will be the effect? I’d be gutted.”

Norwich frontman Josh Sargent is out due to an injury and in his absence, Johannes Hoff Thorup’ side are heavily reliant on Sainz to keep the points ticking for them.
