Hugill joined the Baggies on loan for the 2021/22 campaign back in August but he has struggled since arriving at The Hawthorns – scoring just once in 20 appearances for the club.

The arrival of Daryl Dike in the January window appears to have pushed the 29-year-old further down the pecking order but it is understood that Albion have committed financially to a season-long loan deal.

Hull City and Millwall have both been linked with a move for Hugill but, speaking to the Pink’Un, Hughes revealed that Norwich have no plans to recall the striker with the ball seemingly in West Brom’s court.

He said: “I’d be lying if I sat here and said he’s over the moon, let’s not kid ourselves.

“Jordan is 29 years of age, he wants to play and he wants to score goals.

“He’s scored one goal, so he’s not scored enough, so there is an argument of whether we could recall him. Well, we’re not going to recall a striker that’s not in form.

“He knows that, he’s not stupid, he’s been around the game – but I will say is that he’s an absolutely top professional and he can’t do any more to look after himself on and off the pitch physically to be ready.

“I can’t control the West Brom manager’s decisions, he’s doing what he feels is best for the club and what is best to get West Brom promoted.”

Hughes added: “Jordan is not getting the minutes. He is an asset to us and we do care about him but I think it’s just a waiting game in terms of his agent and West Brom to see what comes.

“But if Jordan has to stay there and fight for his place, he’s more than up for that. He’s a really strong character but he just wants to do as well as he can, to impress Dean Smith, which I think is fabulous.

“He wants to do as well as he can to get back and do well for Norwich, so in that respect, I take my hat off and applaud him, his attitude is top drawer.”

The Verdict

It seems Norwich have no plans to recall Hugill and send him out on loan to either Hull or Millwall, which is understandable given the Baggies have committed financially to a season-long loan deal.

The 29-year-old’s signing always felt like a bit of an afterthought with Valerien Ismael’s looking to bring in a central striker late in the summer window and it’s not been a huge surprise that it hasn’t worked out.

The forward has had success at Championship level in the past but things just haven’t worked out for him at The Hawthorns, where he’s been emblematic of a side that have not taken enough of their chances.

Hughes’ comments suggest that West Brom are in control of the situation and with no other number nines at the club other than Dike, you can understand why they’d want to keep him as cover.

Even so, it could be a situation to keep an eye on in the closing stages of the window.
