The sales of Todd Cantwell to Rangers and Jordan Hugill to Rotherham United earned Norwich City around £1 million and cut the wage bill significantly, according to The Athletic.
The Canaries only signed one player in the January window, bringing in Brazilian winger Marquinhos on loan from Arsenal, but plenty left Carrow Road – both on temporary and permanent deals.
The two highest-profile departures were Cantwell and Hugill, who left the Championship club to join Rangers and Rotherham respectively.
The Athletic has revealed that those two deals saw Norwich bank around £1 million and save a significant amount in wages.
Both players were out of contract in the summer, which meant the Canaries were forced to accept lower transfer fees than they would in previous windows – particularly in the case of Cantwell.
The 24-year-old was linked with a big-money Premier League move a few years ago but his stock has fallen significantly in recent seasons and he was set to become a free agent at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
With the window shut, Norwich can turn their full attention back to the promotion race.
David Wagner’s side are seventh in the table, one point outside the top six, and face Championship leaders Burnley on Saturday morning.

The Verdict
It’s interesting to get some insight into the financial boost Norwich received from the sales of Cantwell and Hugill.
While plenty of players left Carrow Road in January, mostly on loan, the sales to Rangers and Rotherham were the most significant.
As per Capology, Hugill (£28,846 a week) and Cantwell (£25,000 a week) were two of the highest earners in the squad.
Though there were only six months on their respective deals, cutting them from the wage bill is as significant as the fees received.
