We take a look at Norwich City's worst ever managers in terms of points per game

The 2024/25 season marked the start of a new era for Norwich City as Johannes Hoff Thorup replaced David Wagner as the club's manager, and he'll be looking to help the Canaries return to the Premier League after three seasons away.

His side have made an inconsistent start to the new campaign, but they've shown signs that they can be a force this season, and the Dane will be hoping that they can move up the Championship table when things click.

Norwich have had some successful managers over the years, with the likes of Daniel Farke and Paul Lambert helping the club win recent promotions to the Premier League, while Ken Brown helped them to a League Cup win in 1985.

However, there have been plenty of managers who haven't been quite as successful, and using Transfermarkt, we've looked at the club's five worst managers in terms of points per game (PPG).

It must be noted that managers must have been in charge of a minimum of ten games to be considered, so with that in mind, here are Norwich City's five worst managers.

5 Glenn Roeder - 1.15 PPG

Following the year-long stint of Peter Grant in the dugout between 2006 and 2007, Norwich turned to Roeder following his top flight stints with West Ham and Newcastle United.

Bottom of the Championship upon his arrival, Roeder led the Norfolk outfit to safety in the 2007-08 season with two games to spare, but he became unpopular with some fans for releasing Darren Huckerby, who was not allowed a proper send off from supporters as a result.

After indifferent results though during the 2008-09 season, Roeder was given his marching orders in January 2009, having won just 20 of his 65 matches in charge.

4 Bryan Hamilton - 1.10 PPG

Northern Irish man Bryan Hamilton is fifth on the list with a PPG of 1.10 after his 29 games in charge between April 2000 and December 2000.

The Canaries were competing in the First Division at the time, today's equivalent of the Championship, but Hamilton had the side competing in lower mid-table, which was deemed not good enough by the club's hierarchy, and he was sacked in December 2000.

Norwich City was his last senior management job after previously managing the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Leicester City and Northern Ireland, although he did return to bitter rivals Ipswich Town as a coach in 2001, where he had played between 1971 and 1976.

A recent name makes the list, with Dean Smith picking up a PPG of just 1.09 during his 56 games in charge between November 2021 and December 2022.

Norwich were relegated from the Premier League in the 2021/22 season under his stewardship, which explains his lowly PPG, but he was sacked in December 2022 after struggling to take the Championship by storm, which many people expected the Canaries to do following relegation.

Smith was appointed Leicester City manager later in the 2022/23 season but was unable to keep them in the Premier League, and has since opted for a move abroad, currently managing Charlotte FC in the MLS.

2 Bryan Gunn - 1.00 PPG

Bryan Gunn registered a PPG of just 1.00 during his 20 games in charge of Norwich between January 2009 and August 2009.

Gunn was a legend at Norwich City thanks to his 12-year spell as a player between 1986 and 1998, but it's fair to say that his time as a manager wasn't quite as successful.

With the Canaries struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table, Gunn was appointed in January 2009 but was unable to help them avoid relegation to League One, finishing 22nd.

He remained in situ for the start of the 2009/10 campaign, but after a 7-1 opening day defeat to Colchester United at Carrow Road, he departed the club in what remains his one and only job in management.

1 John Deehan - 1.00 PPG

John Deehan has the misfortune of being Norwich City's worst ever manager in terms of points per game, with just 1.00 PPG after 59 games.

Deehan has the same PPG as Gunn, but he managed more games, making him statistically worse.

The former Canaries striker was manager between January 1994 and April 1995 in what was his first management job, and he led the club to relegation from the Premier League during the 1994/95 season.
